Between missions, you can explore the land, complete side quests, or raid bandit camps. Furthermore, you can hunt animals for meat and hides, which you can then trade with the community.
But the story runs much deeper. It’s not just about survival. Besides completing missions, there’s also Deacon’s quest to uncover Sara’s fate, the different human factions, and the cause of the zombie outbreak. There’s even a hint of a government conspiracy in the story. The game has multiple storylines to explore. Unfortunately, the hidden narratives are the only interesting thing about Days Gone. All the characters—except Deacon—are unremarkable.
The game also doesn’t offer much in the way of gameplay. It’s essentially a typical third-person shooter where everyone seems to need something. The game includes plenty of gunfights and some mandatory stealth missions. While this isn’t necessarily a flaw, the game doesn’t offer anything new that you haven’t already experienced in other games. In fact, if you’re a fan of Far Cry 5, you’ll find everything quite familiar.

Overall, Days Gone is a familiar action-adventure game. It presents the same story of humanity’s struggle to rebuild society, a common theme in zombie survival games. The game feels bloated with numerous branching storylines, repetitive missions, and overused characters. It’s not bad, just tedious. With some improvements and tweaks—to remove the unnecessary and boring elements—this game could become unique and interesting.
