The game’s developers have done a fantastic job with the content: Chicago is a vast and densely populated city, and every resident has a unique profile accessible from your phone, including their name, annual salary, and other detailed information. Each person has their own secrets, accessible only to a hacker like yourself. One person might have a criminal record, another might be burdened with debt, and yet another might be passionate about classical music. The attention to detail in Watch Dogs is exceptional, and the portrayal of life and its diversity is superb.
Unfortunately, the world of Watch Dogs suffers from a weak plot, a problem that quickly becomes apparent. The main storyline is uninspired, revolving around a poorly executed revenge plot. The characters are noticeably shallow, and as a player, you feel no sympathy for Aiden Pearce and his henchmen—a shame for a game that clearly drew heavily from GTA V! However, you will encounter numerous side stories as you wander the streets of Chicago. Passersby often tell their tales, adding a welcome new depth to the plot.
Excellent Gameplay Marred by Poorly Designed Missions:
Watch Dogs is an open-world action game, meaning you can freely explore Chicago with access to a variety of vehicles. Again, comparisons to GTA are inevitable, as the two games seem to share many elements, but Ubisoft has succeeded in delivering a genuine alternative to Rockstar’s iconic title by offering a gameplay style that relies on hacking anything, anywhere. Your phone will constantly alert you to hacking opportunities, including security cameras, traffic lights, and even drawbridges. These alerts help you create chaos, as well as intercept criminals and cops.
The gameplay is excellent, and the interface is simple. With a single button press, you can hack into all electrical devices within your field of vision, transforming what could have been an annoying aspect of the game into a highly useful feature. I wish the missions received the same attention, but unfortunately, they didn’t. While there are many varied missions in Watch Dogs, they suffer from a lack of clarity that can be quite frustrating. The objectives are often vague, and it can be nearly impossible to start the same mission five times without fully understanding what’s required of you.
Good but not essential:
What are your thoughts on the first truly next-gen game? Even if Watch Dogs doesn’t quite live up to expectations, it’s still an excellent open-world action game. Chicago becomes a vast playing field, with content and detail that I wish we had more of. The hacking mechanics are well-executed, and when you add the excellent multiplayer mode, Watch Dogs becomes a fantastic game with a unique and distinctive gameplay style that makes you forget its weak storyline.
But Watch Dogs is a bit of a technical disappointment. After initial trailers showed it to be a fantastic next-gen game, it seems to have hit a technical snag. To get the game running smoothly on PC, next-gen, and last-gen consoles, the developers had to lower their standards. The result? Graphics that fall short of initial expectations.
Even if not spectacular (it’s on par with its rival GTA V), Watch Dogs’ visuals are far from the best currently available. However, one aspect has been perfected: the city of Chicago, which is meticulously designed to be incredibly realistic. With so many people roaming the open world, exploring Chicago’s streets is a truly immersive experience. If you’re playing Watch Dogs on PC, though, make sure you have a powerful enough machine to fully enjoy the game!
